Christmas in September

It’s not Santa in his sleigh, it’s a group of men and a delivery truck! After living out of suitcases for about 5 months, we finally got our household goods from the States delivered (9/20/21)! We arrived on Guam June 29th but during May and June we were busy preparing. We moved out of our apartment in Columbus, I lived in my girl Julie’s basement to finish up work while Paul was in West Virginia visiting family, I went to Texas to visit family and plan our wedding, then met up with Paul in West Virginia to then fly to Guam together. So yes it has been a very long time living out of suitcases and playing at vagabonds. We were very fortunate to only spend one week in a hotel room before getting a house on the military base. Once on the base we were given the opportunity to have some “loaner furniture” until our shipment arrived. This included items such as: double sized bed, couch, bedside table, 2 dressers, and a dining table.

On the day of our delivery it was a well-orchestrated event. The loaner furniture was moved out first thing in the morning, allowing space for the rest of our delivery. Then the delivery truck with 5 crates full of our belongings arrived about an hour later. With a team of 3-4 guys they unloaded the crates and brought the boxes into the house. Once in the house they called out to me the number on the box, which I double checked on the master list from the people who packed up our belongings in West Virginia. When I found the correct box number it got a check mark on the list, we gave instructions on which room to place the box in. This went on for a few hours. Paul left prior to lunch to pick up pizza we ordered for everyone. Shortly after he left, I got a call from Paul….he left his military ID on the kitchen counter. AKA he was unable to get back on the base! Meanwhile there’s a back up of boxes waiting for me to check it off the list before they put it in a room. Needless to say we took a 10 minute break so I could drive to Paul and give him his ID so he could get back on base.

Honestly that was our biggest issue! If anyone has done one of these military moves overseas, you know that is a huge WIN! We had one box that got banged up but everything inside of it was unharmed. Let’s be honest, my main concern was my Peloton bike and she arrived in perfect condition!

We are FINALLY all unpacked and everything has a home besides our pictures and things to hang up on the walls. It’s finally beginning to feel real that we will be here for the next 3 years. What a wonderful feeling it is to start to feel settled for the first time in 5 months.
